What makes a good massage?

While overall cleanliness, comfort and a well experienced masseuse is mandatory there are a few ancillary things that I look for that takes a good massage to a great spa experience.

1)Towels
This is make or break. There is no bigger downer than being handed a stale oil smelling towel at the end of the shower. Regardless of the category of Spa one is visiting, having clean towels is non negotiable.

2)Feet wipe
Many of us wear open sandals and walk in to our spa treatment room with dust and germs on our feet having being outside. A warm cloth wipe of our feet at the beginning of the treatment is not only relaxing but also hygienic.

3)Scent
Use of oil can have a residual smell in most massage beds and rooms. A fresh scent is a must have. Im not talking about fancy reed diffusers or anything. It can as simple as a incense stick that can make the room smelling great and lift up your mood. Singh SMELL is King.

4)Eye Mask
A simple rosewater /cold water dipped cotton pad makes a good relaxing eye mask. Its inexpensive and definitely worth some brownie points. When put on the eyes before the massage begins it puts me at ease immediately.

5)Bed Comfort
Massage beds are important. I dont know the term for it, lets call the face hole when laying on the stomach are even more important. The pillow that rests your head in place and sometimes the noodle like pillow that supports your knees enhances your spa experience. When the floor below does not have a fancy bowl containing water pebbles and flowers in my mind Im already lowering their score.

6)Music
I went to this fancy spa that asked me what kind of music I would like to listen to. Options were calm, serene, nature, and soothing sounds. There is a chance they have just one track of music in their system but being given a choice I was pleased. Good music manipulates our senses to a great degree. A tune played in loop is a turn off. Its nice when spas pay attention to detail to this aspect.

7)Hydration
Having plenty of water well in advance is important before a spa treatment. Massage can give you cramps if a body is not well hydrated. I see not many Spas give importance to this point. A spa that mentions water before treatment has my vote.
