NuAyurveda : Abhyangam
I went to the Nuayurveda in Andheri west, Mumbai. After a couple minutes wait I was taken to their therapy room. I had opted for Abhyangam with two massage therapists. Its a fast paced intense deep tissue massage that improves blood circulation, reduces pain and inflammation and encourages toxins elimination from the body. Hence it may be more intense than relaxing. The rooms are small. You are given a cave man type flimsy cloth with no elastic that will act as your only item of clothing to cover your family jewels! Carry an extra pair of underpants if this sadhu baba chaddi makes you uncomfortable.
The massage starts by you sitting on a chair and a prayer to Goddess Dhanvantri. Head massage is given first with a curry leaves herbal oil. I had to ask them to be gentle to avoid hair breakage. 10 mins later a hop onto the massage bed, the abhyangam begins. Face massage with an oil is given at the beginning. I was apprehensive about applying oil on my face without any face cleanser being used first. And to top it all I was to be given full body steam later. This could be disastrous for an oily skin person like myself. It would be nice if the ladies gave a head up before applying oil on the face. I asked for a tissue and wiped the face oil immediately. And when I was in the steam much later, I first washed my face with a facewash, I carried from home to unclog my facial pores.
Using two therapists is great. They had good coordination. Most of the strokes are directed towards the heart to increase circulation. They use oil copious amount of oil. I did have to ask them to lower the pressure a couple times. Music is a small tune played in loop. I played my meditation chants from my phone. The whole massage takes about an hour. The attached bathroom has a steam machine fitted. I was given 10 mins of steam. Towels are not clean, they have a residual oil smell on them. I was so glad to have carried my own towels from home. Soap and shampoo are available. Shower cap is given on request. The floor of the room can be oily so be careful. At the end of the shower and change you are given some herbal tea in the waiting area.
Book your appointment in advance and ask for attached steam room. The 9 am slot is quiet and preferable. Priyanka is a good masseuse. I would have liked if the clean the face with a mild cleanser and wipe the feet before starting the massage. This massage will cost you around Rs 2000. For the money you pay, this massage is reasonable. I have been to spas that charge a lot more money and are far from being good.
VERDICT:
Cleanliness: 3/5
Staff: 3/5
Towels: 1/5
Price: 5/5
Ambience: 3/5
Steam & Shower : 4/5
Parking: Limited
